Professional Tips

Families value professionals who:

  • honor the families’ values, culture and knowledge.
  • support them in helping their child achieve the desired goals and outcomes.
  • treat their child with respect.
  • will not gloss over any concerns, anxiety or conflict the family is having, but instead focus on them in a respectful manner.
  • are flexible and responsive to changing family issues.
  • want to support, not “fix” our children.
  • partner with families in relationships based on equality and respect.
  • learn from the child and family.
  • look at the strengths and unique needs of the child and the family.
  • use respectful language. Professionals who would ask themselves: “would I use these terms to describe my child, my friend, myself?”
  • realize the overall purpose of the work they do is to prepare my child to live a successful, meaningful life in the community.
  • communicate regularly and work with us to measure the progress of goals.
  • honor family choice.
