Understanding Basic Systems
Developmental Disabilities
Professional Tips
Families value professionals who:
- honor the families’ values, culture and knowledge.
- support them in helping their child achieve the desired goals and outcomes.
- treat their child with respect.
- will not gloss over any concerns, anxiety or conflict the family is having, but instead focus on them in a respectful manner.
- are flexible and responsive to changing family issues.
- want to support, not “fix” our children.
- partner with families in relationships based on equality and respect.
- learn from the child and family.
- look at the strengths and unique needs of the child and the family.
- use respectful language. Professionals who would ask themselves: “would I use these terms to describe my child, my friend, myself?”
- realize the overall purpose of the work they do is to prepare my child to live a successful, meaningful life in the community.
- communicate regularly and work with us to measure the progress of goals.
- honor family choice.
